What led you to a career in craft beer?

Long time home brewer trying commercial examples available at the time and knowing I could compete on quality and varieties, plus there were <45 breweries open when starting Arcana paperwork.

If you weren’t doing this for a living, you’d probably be _________?

Probably managing a small nursery or working in EH&S, but who knows for sure. This is a lot of work but I’m much happier now that in prior day-jobs.

What are your five favorite beers of all time?

Barrel Aged Old Rasputin (North Coast), Pump King (Southern Tier), Bourbon County Stout (Goose Island), Jasmine IPA on cask (can’t remember the brewery), and TBD (because there’s always a new amazing brewing around the corner).


If you could enjoy a beer with 3 people, living or dead, who would they be and why?

Michael Jackson (the beer expert, not the music guy).

How have you seen the craft beer industry change over the past five years, and how do you see it changing in the next five?

There has been a huge growth in small operators, so many more styles available, increasing swings in quality with all the experimentation and new operators trying to get a handle on the business, and increasing competition. More consolidation (aka buyouts/sellouts), product refinements as people narrow down their product lines and areas max out their brewery capacity, and continued demand for high quality local crafted brews.


Favorite place to drink a beer?

The backyard/garden/beach, really anywhere outdoors.

Pretend it’s bring-your-fans-to-work day. What can we expect to see you doing during a typical day on the job?

Clean, clean, clean, clean, clean. Haha, seriously, sweeping, tank cleaning, keg washing mopping, dusting, etc.

Top notch braggarts in addition to fun and tasting beers!


Please share a little-known fun fact about yourself.

Brewed my first batch of anything in high school for a science project (fun and detailed, but yes, they made me do another one afterward since the principal couldn’t approve of alcohol science in a high school setting, prudes). It was a boysenberry port wine (still have a few bottles) that could take the paint off a battleship then but is actually pretty tasty now.
